January 26, 2020, was not a day any sports fans would want to remember. The NBA legend, Kobe Bryant, passed away along with his daughter in a helicopter crash in the city of Calabasas, California. While the entire country was mourning his loss, Tiger Woods was playing a PGA Tour event, because of which he had to face a lot of criticism later.
After the news spread, everyone’s eyes were on Woods, who was playing round 4 at the 2020 Famer’s Insurance Open. Even though the audience shouted, ‘Do it for mamba,’ there was no response from the golfer. He continued to play his game and finished with a T9 on the leaderboard.
Furthermore, Woods signed the scorecard, gave autographs to the fans, and even spoke to the Tour officials after the game. Since none of his actions were appropriate for a person who just lost his friend, people criticized him.
Even after the golf legend revealed he was unaware of Bryant‘s death while playing, there were rumors that he knew about it all along.
Tiger Woods revealed why he acted like he didn’t know the news about Bryant’s news
People alleged that Woods knew about the accident of the former shooting guard of the LA Lakers. However, such was not the case. What people thought was an act was nothing but a misunderstanding.
“I didn’t understand why they were yelling, ‘Do it for Mamba,’ on the back nine,” Woods said. ‘The Black Mamba’ is the nickname Bryant gave himself. Notably, he created it as his alter-ego to get through all the struggles in his career.
“People yell things all the time,” the 15-time major champion said. “So I was just plodding along, doing my own thing.” According to him, he didn’t realize what they meant until his caddie, Joe LaCava, told him the terrible news. “It’s unbelievable,” Woods told the press in 2020 about the NBA legend’s demise. “The reality that he’s no longer with us,” he added.
Notably, Woods was playing his first-ever tournament in 2020 at the Farmer’s Insurance Open when everyone got to know about Bryant’s news. It was one of the first events he participated in after withdrawing from the Northern Trust Open, citing a mild oblique strain.
The golfer was playing in the Top 10 at the championship. Therefore, it was not a surprise his caddie didn’t want to inform him about Bryant until he finished his game.
